On November 17, Durham University presented its 2021 Teaching and Learning Awards.
The winners were nominated by their colleagues and more than 100 entries were generated for those thought to have gone “above and beyond” in their roles to support teaching and learning.
The hybrid ceremony was hosted by Prof. Alan Houston, vice-provost of education.
The Excellence in Teaching and Learning Award went to Dr. Alison McManus of Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD) in recognition of her support for Foundation Students from the Arts and Humanities Faculty, including her innovative work with Durham University Museums.
This year’s Excellence in Student Academic Support Award was awarded to Dr. Alistair Brown for his work supporting students in English Studies, particularly with the move to online study caused by the pandemic.
The 2021 Excellence in Research Student Supervision Award was given to Prof. Paul Langley from the Department of Geography for his holistic approach to supervision and for adapting this approach during Covid-19.
The Unsung Hero of Teaching and Learning Award was presented to Dr. Gillian Campling from the Department of Biosciences for her work in supporting students for the past 20 years, which has included everything from book clubs to dog walking classes.
The Most Impactful Innovation in Teaching and Learning Award was awarded to Dr. David Petts for his work developing innovative new forms of assessment in archaeology using social media.
A further award also was given to Dr. Mathilde Rodger, in recognition of her exceptional work in a tough year. She had a profound effect across all faculties. Rodger made her contribution by helping to move the University online and adapting to Blackboard Ultra, both within her department, within her faculty, and across the institution.
